Submission Guidelines

AUTHOR GUIDELINES

Aims & Scope

The scope of the of the ASEE Computers in Education journal is to provide a forum for discussing novel approaches to engineering education involving computers.

While the Aims and Scope of CoED Journal and division overlaps with the the purpose of ASEE there is special emphasis on the following:

  • To provide a medium of exchange for innovative concepts and experience-proven applications of computers and other computational methods and devices in education.
  • To develop, test, and publish research processed curricula for computer instruction for student and teacher development at all educational levels.
  • To contribute to the general knowledge of the CoED membership with respect to computation.
  • To broaden, where beneficial, the use of computational technologies by educators, students, institutions, and technical professionals.

Submission Elements

A good manuscript has the following elements:

  • An abstract (~350 words) and three to five (3-5) keywords.
  • Organized into appropriate sections including an introductory section, a brief overview of the supporting literature, a description of the innovation, example applications, an assessment section, conclusion and summary (with an overview of future work as appropriate).
    • Educational or pedagogical content. Papers that just describe a research or a design project, even if students are involved, are not appropriate. The paper needs to explain how it was used in the classroom, what students are expected to learn, etc. Pure research papers are not acceptable.
    • Literature review. While the level of scholarship is not the same as a research journal, there should be some context and relationship to what others have done in the area. Authors should also make it clear or make a case for why their work is unique or novel.
    • Assessment. The paper should show how the effort was received, or if it was effective. Some examples are responses on course evaluation forms, survey, or pre and post- tests. It may not be necessary to include a double blind statistically controlled study but there must be some level of assessment
    • Practicality. Again, we do not expect the level of scholarship seen in Journal of Engineering Education (e.g. double blind statistically controlled studies) but papers appropriate for Advances in Engineering Education with a computer application focus are applicable (http://advances.asee.org/guide-for-authors/). Think of CoEd as a cross between a journal and a magazine. * Results should be novel and well documented; but they should be immediately useful or interesting to practitioners of engineering education. Papers appropriate for the CoED Journal should focus on the scholarship of application, teaching, and learning. To that end, details about how the concept was used in the classroom, copies of assignments, lessons learned, student evaluations, etc are all welcome and important.
  • Acknowledgements to external funding sources
  • References with URLs/DOIs where applicable

Author Checklist

Does the article:

  • State clear research questions related to engineering education?
  • Provide a gap in the literature to explain why the study/research is needed?
  • Provide a solid literature review that situates the study/research (and gap) in the literature?
  • Provide a theoretical framework if the study/research is qualitative work?
  • Explain, clearly and systematically, the methods and analysis used to collect the data?
  • Showcase findings in clear language (and when possible with graphics, charts, etc…) to point to the most important aspects of the work?
  • Provide conclusions based on the research questions, methods used, and findings, as well as refer back to the literature review?
  • Explain the implications of the work?
  • Explain the limitations of the work?
  • Highlight a study that is novel, can be replicated, and moves the field forward?

Note – For the COED Journal a study with any number of participants can be included, and the COED Journal looks for works with a solid foundation that others in the field can build upon.

In order to aid the author in preparation, please look at a recent copy of the Journal for a better understanding of the interests of our readership.

Once again, pure research or design papers or papers that present an engineering application disconnected from classroom experiences are not appropriate.

How to Submit / Requirements:

  • Blinded manuscript [pdf and editable source]: no author names, affiliations, or identifying information should exist in your initial submission
  • A separate title page with all authors and affiliations listed (to prevent conflicts of interest on our double-blind review process)
  • A Cover Letter to the editorial board describing your submission and how it aligns to the aims & scope of the journal.

AUTHOR FEES

In order to help cover the cost of publication, this journal charges the following author fee(s). You can pay them anytime after the submission via your account on the system using a credit card.

Article Publication Fee:  If your paper is accepted for publication, you will be asked to pay an article publication fee of $250 (USD) which helps to offset the publication costs associated with our open-access journal.

In order to remain fully transparent, our annual operating costs are listed here:

  • ASEE hosting/maintenance ~ 4K USD
  • Review Management System ~ 2K USD
  • Typesetting ~ 2K USD
